I purchased this for use with a 4th generation Ipod touch running iOS v. 4.3.5 (8L1)and have tried it also with a 3rd generation Ipod touch running the same iOS version. It seems to run as intended and equally well on both devices. When using a compatible app the picture on my 2003 Phillips TV is really great. The problem is finding apps that are compatible. Most of them do not direct video out to the TV so when it is plugged in there is sound but no picture on the TV. This cable does not allow mirroring by default. I have read that this can be done on a jailbroken device but I haven't tried it yet. Here is a brief run down of the apps that work well with this cable
The itunes app - 100% compatible. You can buy movies or TV shows and have them show up just fine on the TV. Most things have free previews that play fine too. There are a number of free TV shows available, such as series premieres and NBC nightly news. There are also many free college lectures. Kind of neat.
The photos app - works fine. Can display photos on the TV in slideshow mode or watch videos
The You Tube app - works fine. Can play all the Youtube content right on your TV.
NBC Nightly news app - Works great.
Playon app - Appears to work but you need a fast PC to be your video server
Netflix app - Appears to work (displays red netflix screen on my TV) but I don't have a subscription
The following should work but don't (only plays sound on the TV with the video only on the ipod touch):
CBS sunday morning app - Plays commercials on the TV fine but none of the actual content on the TV - LAME, Videos from the CBS mobile website seem to play fine though through Safari
PBS app - Could be great if they enabled video out
MSNBC - Strange that NBC nightly news works so well but this one doesn't
Crackle - Could be cool if it worked
TV.com - Displays the message "External displays not supported..." on the TV while playing the video on the ipod touch. Could have been cool
VLC Streamer free app. - Doesn't display on the TV but claims the paid version works for video out. I haven't tried that one yet.
CNN app - Doesn't display video from the App but I can run videos that are viewable on my TV from their mobile website using Safari
Joost - nope
Redbox - only plays video previews on the device itself.
Overall I think this is a pretty cool purchase. It is much cheaper than the Apple OEM version and seems to work as intended. When video out does work the picture is pretty good. The biggest problem is that most of the apps out there that should support video out do not yet support it. Hopefully this can be fixed in the near future.
7/11/2012 NO LONGER WORKS WITH LATEST UPDATE FROM APPLE
I am not sure exactly when this occurred but my 4th generation Ipod touch now running iOS version 5.1.1 no longer works with this cable. It was fun while it lasted!
